New Year’s Eve Summary of 1943
I look back over the year which brought us many bad times and very few that were good. One thing it did for sure was to bring the entire German population together in a united effort for all-out war. Women and old men had to go to work either in the factories or to replace soldiers in offices and command posts. We now stand at that point in time where we must make it through, no matter how hard the going. The terror keeps getting worse. Even in southern Germany, our beautiful Innsbruck is heavily bombarded. The Reich’s capital suffered heavy damages. Still, in all of these cities life goes on with the people going about their work ever tougher and more determined. We know we have to stand firm. Even as one stronghold after the other is lost, the people in 1943 do not have to starve; after each bombing, they are taken care of and the children are kept safe. The best proof of our affirmation of life is the increase in number of births. Our people want to live. In order to be able to live in peace, we have to fight this battle until the final victory is won. I am adding a year-end report:
1/1/43
From the Führe/s proclamation for the New Year: “There is no doubt that at the end of this war the National Socialist State will exist as an imperturbable and indestructible block in Europe.”
1/9/43
Announcement of the Japanese imperial government: “The National government of the Republic of China today declared war on the British Empire and the USA.”
1/20/43
Agreement between Germany and Japan on economic collaboration.
1/30/43
Tenth year anniversary of the seizure of power [by the National Socialists]. At a Rally in the Sportpalast, Reichsminister Dr. Goebbels reads a proclamation from the Führer.
2/3/43
“The battle of Stalingrad is over. Faithful to their oath until the last breath, the 6th Army under the exemplary leadership of Generalfeldmarschall Paulus succumbed to the superiority of the enemy and disfavor of the circumstances. The sacrifice of the Army was not for naught. They died so Germany may live.”
2/5/43
Conference of the national and regional leaders to confirm the unity of all the powers of the nation for total warfare. On February 7th the Führer spoke to an assembly of Party leaders.
2/18/43
Total mobilization of the Homeland. At a huge Sportpalast Rally, Dr. Goebbels set forth the measures for making full use of all our strengths for the all-out war: freeing of soldiers for the Front, freeing of workers for the armament industry, introduction of far reaching work duties for women. In his speech, Dr. Goebbels exhorted, “I give voice to my conviction that Germany, through the tragic blow of fate at Stalingrad, has been vindicated to its very core. Therefore, the watchword becomes: Now! People, rise up! Storm, break loose!”
2/20/43
From the Führer’s proclamation on the 23rd anniversary of the founding of the Party: “Gigantic masses of the German people unconditionally agree with the New Reich’s ideas and the National Socialistic conception.
